Wat is Poly Lactid Acid (PLA)?

Poly Lactid Acid is een transparant, thermoplastisch polymeer van melkzuur, oftewel Polylactide (PLA) in granulaatvorm. Het product heeft qua transparantie, stijfheid en verwerkingseigenschappen veel weg van PET, wel bekend van de PET-fles. Kunststofverwerkende bedrijven kunnen enorm veel met PLA.

Waar wordt PLA voor gebruikt?
Poly Lactid Acid leent zich onder meer voor de productie van verpakkingen, drinkbekers en flessen, maar ook van plantenpotten, non-woven producten, tapijt, agrarische folie, kleding, coatings en bestek. En of het nog niet genoeg was kun je er bijvoorbeeld ook foam, pasjes en krimp-sleeves van maken. En zelfs dan zijn we nog niet volledig.

Hoe wordt het gemaakt?
Poly Lactid Acid, afgekort PLA, is een biokunststof van plantaardige suiker (dextrose). Het bedrijf Nature Works ® maakt PLA uit dextrose, afkomstig van hun moederconcern Cargill. Cargill haalt de suiker uit koolhydraatrijke gewassen. In de toekomst wil Nature Works ® PLA produceren uit cellulose, zodat de resten van bladeren, stengels van een plant maar ook gras en zelfs oud papier gebruikt kunnen worden.

Met melkzuurbacteriën wordt de dextrose omgezet in het monomeer melkzuur. De volgende stap is het maken van lactide, een verbeterd monomeer. In de polymeerfabriek in Blair (VS, Nebraska) zorgt een katalysator ervoor dat deze cyclische monomeren zich openen en een lange ketting van monomeren vormen. Het resultaat is een transparant, thermoplastisch polymeer van melkzuur, oftewel Polylactide (PLA).
